THE MYSTERIOUS ENDING
NB. When I made this gallery I didn't have access to the final episode of the French TV-series. As it turned out later, the German print in my possession was in fact identical to the French (other than slightly altered opening and closing credits). So... apparently the ending shown in screen captures below is the canonical one. Still doesn't make sense to me!

Above: Captain Nemo, mortally wounded by the pirates, bids farewell...

Hmm, who turned out the lights? Cue: A rumbling volcano!

"Go now... Be happy among people," Captain Nemo pleads and off they go. Behind them the Dakar Crypt begins to crumble...

The Nautilus is deserted (apart from Captain Nemo) and now it's sinking. This is the point in all other versions I've watched where things start to blow up, but not here!

Later...? A ship appears in the horizon. "We're saved," the castaways cheer, without even bothering telling us that this is not simply a ship, it's The Duncan. In some of the other versions I've watched this was mentioned casually, in some not at all - apparently NO version explains that it was in fact Captain Nemo who telegraphed the ship shortly before he died. Weird!

Back to the volcano. Eh, the island hasn't blown up yet? Actually I was quite disappointed with this ending; the Spanish rental video print contains tons of cool footage of the Island blowing up not seen anywhere else.

Incredibly Captain Nemo is still alive! But not for long...

"Look deep into my eyes... deeper... deeper..." KA-BLAM! (This has happened long ago in all other prints known to me.)

Never mind, it does look cool, right?

More footage of erupting volcano, followed by voice actor credits. The end!
